Dwelling Place

On the very same day a traveling missionary friend called to invite me to house-sit on fourth and Emerson in Denver, I received a call from programs administrator, Shirley Van Heukelem, with First Church (also located on Emerson street) inviting me to join the staff as Administrative Assistant. My family and I had been praying for my next Kingdom assignment; our God had provided a dwelling place, new friends, gainful employment and a sanctuary.

Two Christmas seasons later, my missionary friend sold her home and I was couch-surfing, trying to find any place to rent somewhere near work. I was tired, teary-eyed and frustrated after 6 months of searching, and finding places I couldn’t really afford since Denver’s drastic spike in rent.

My Bible study was praying, the ladies on our prayer chain prayed, the men’s group prayed and my family prayed. Deep in my heart, in the place where longings live, I wanted privacy, in a clean place, near a park, where I could host family suppers and feel safe. I made a list, asked God about it and tucked it into my Bible. I asked if He might provide a place for me by Christmas.

Soon after, Pastor Joel ducked into my office with a bright idea! A brother in Christ within our fellowship was headed to Florida for the winter months, and might consider renting his home in exchange for keeping an eye on the property.

I felt a bit awkward initially, but went for a visit. I found a warm and charming home, with a gracious gentleman willing to share not only his place, but his garage, his food and his lovely yard. The home is near a park with a walking trail, 15 minutes from work with cordial neighbors.

Most importantly, the lesson for me was God is my dwelling place. He is with me everywhere I have stayed, protecting, providing and proving His faithfulness. Because my children and grand-children were in the prayer process with me, we now have the shared testimony of how God heard and strategically answered our prayer at just the right time, by providing for His people through His people. Praise is rising in our hearts, and on our lips.

Ezekiel 37:26-28New American Standard Bible (NASB)

26 I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will [a]place them and multiply them, and will set My sanctuary in their midst forever. 27 My dwelling place also will be with them; and I will be their God, and they will be My people. 28 And the nations will know that I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forever.”
